Are Assisted Living & Nursing Homes the Same?

Not exactly. While they do offer many of the same services, a nursing home will provide 24-hour medical care and supervision for residents.  An assisted living community may make 24-hour service available, however a more independent lifestyle is encouraged.  Many assisted living communities have private and apartment style housing, with most having their own kitchens.  Almost all facilities have group dining areas, as well as spaces for social gatherings and recreational activities.

Nursing homes, or skilled nursing facilities, provide services geared toward residents that have medical needs that require physicians or nurses to provide services.  Years ago, a nursing home was the option for long-term care.  Now, nursing homes, better referred to as skilled nursing facilities, provide care to individuals who are recuperating from an illness or surgery or an accident with the goal of returning home to their own residence.  This isn’t always the case but the emergence of the assisted living communities has taken over the care of individuals who don’t necessarily need skilled medical supervision.

Assisted living communities can administer assistance to their residents with the intent of keeping their residents as independent as possible within the safety of a supervised environment.  These communities provide a lot of seniors with helpful and safe environments but also companionship and options for activities.
