Starting the conversation about a future or upcoming move can be a challenging experience. As the older adult may be in denial about their diminishing capacity to care for themselves, and because they likely value their independence, they are often not interested in hearing reasons as to why they should move.
People procrastinate. They wait far too long to arrange for in-home care or to move to retirement or assisted living. There are many reasons that people procrastinate.
As the concept of how a family functions in the US began to change in the late 1970’s and more and more women began joining the workforce, the ability to care for our aging parents also began to change. In the early 1980’s, a new industry evolved to fill the niche – care provided by paid caregivers.
It’s common for people to slip into the pattern of thinking that selecting an adult family home for a loved one is like apartment hunting. Although the layout of the house and rooms are important, there are other factors that are equally as important.

The programs offered typically include meals, assistance with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), socialization, and activities. Their goal is to keep people mentally stimulated and active during the day.

“The idea of moving from our home of forty years was daunting until I talked to CHOICE. I may not have moved quickly, but I moved in a way that was comfortable for me, and I knew I was supported through this difficult and very big move. Without my husband here to help me make decisions, it gave me peace of mind to know someone was looking after my best interests. Thank you, CHOICE, for being like family to me.” – Char
